All about Chlorine
In its elemental state, Chlorine is a gas. It was found by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, in 1774. Chlorine is found predominantly in salt. It is a chemical element of the halogen family, symbol CI. It is also quite abundant in nature but not on it's own. It is a necessary for most life forms.
Chlorine in a solid form
Liquid chlorine in a flask
This is a sample of pure chlorine gas. Chlorine gas is a pale greenish yellow color.
A Chlorine atom
Discovery and naming Chlorine was discovered by Carl William Scheele, a Swedish chemist. He discovered that there was a greenish yellow gas when he used hydrochloric acid with mineral pyrolusite. Scheele was confused about his discovery. He believed that the gas was a compound of oxygen with a new element. A english chemist and physicist, Sir Humphry Davy suggested the name chlorine for the gas based on the Greek word chloros meaning greenish yellow.
